HS2 branded ‘unachievable’ by Government’s personal watchdog in big blow

The venture has been branded “unachievable” by the official infrastructure watchdog, with prices spiralling and the high-speed rail hyperlink not scheduled to open till 2029 on the earliest.

The Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) has assigned the plans a “red” score for the development of the primary two phases of the , operating from London to Birmingham after which on to Crewe in Cheshire.

The score, contained within the IPA’s annual report on main works – which was launched final week, states: “Successful supply of the seems to be unachievable.

“There are main points with venture definition, schedule, funds, high quality and/or advantages supply, which at this stage don’t seem like manageable or resolvable.

“The project may need re-scoping and/or its overall viability reassessed.”

Commenting on the news on Twitter, Tory MP for Lichfield Michael Fabricant, a vocal critic of the venture, merely tweeted: “If only…”

Earlier this month, HS2 Ltd’s chief government Mark Thurston, 56, introduced his resignation amid main delays and value pressures for the high-speed railway venture.

He is to go away his position in September after six-and-a-half years main the Government-owned firm.
