‘Tory candidates dropped after MI5 warned they could be Chinese spies’

he Conservative Party dropped two potential candidates to turn out to be MPs after MI5 warned they might be Chinese spies, it has been reported.
It comes as ministers proceed to face questions on allegations of espionage in Westminster after the arrest of a parliamentary researcher on suspicion of spying for Beijing.
The Times stated the safety service suggested the Tory Party in 2021 and 2022 that the 2 MP hopefuls shouldn’t be included on the central checklist of candidates.
M15 is claimed to have raised issues that the 2 individuals had hyperlinks to the United Front Work Department – one of many key departments of the Chinese Communist Party – and had been blocked from the checklist.
The newspaper cited an unnamed supply as saying: “It was made very clear that they posed a risk.
“They were subsequently blocked from the candidates list. They weren’t told why.”
A Conservative Party spokesman stated: “When we receive credible information regarding security concerns over potential candidates we act upon them.”
