Dixon and Daughters on the Nationwide Theatre assessment
Written for the corporate Clean Break who take care of ladies within the prison justice system, it opens with widowed Mary (Brid Brennan) coming dwelling after serving a brief jail sentence for perjury. Her daughters are ready for her and he or she’s not completely satisfied about it.
She berates Julie (Andrea Lowe) an alcoholic fleeing her abusive husband for ruining her mattress by sleeping in it (“It’s a memory foam mattress”), ignores Bernie (Liz White) whose makes an attempt to maintain the peace fall on deaf ears and is venomous in direction of psychobabbling step daughter Briana (Alison Fitzjohn) whose proof received her convicted.

Jostling collectively in her suburban dwelling depicted like an open doll’s home with semi opaque partitions by way of which we see actions that is perhaps actual or imagined, the ladies reveal aspects of their current pasts, all of them related to the lads of their lives, notably the lifeless father.
The effective solid, together with Yazmin Kayani as granddaughter Ella, negotiates the rocky path of cyclical abuse, denial and survival with velocity and magnificence below Róisin McBrinn’s full of life path.
The sense that the home is haunted by reminiscences of stunning occasions is emphasised by creepy lighting and sound results. It’s not good however it doesn’t have to be.
