The Smiths bassist Andy Rourke dies from most cancers, aged 59

The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr yesterday paid an emotional tribute to bassist Andy Rourke after confirming his bandmate had died from most cancers aged 59.

Marr, 59, wrote on Twitter: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer.

“Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans.”

Marr mentioned it was an “absolute privilege” to play alongside Rourke all through their lives, explaining how they met “as schoolboys
