Asda’s £4 sunscreen beats £22 premium product in checks

An affordable grocery store own-brand sunscreen has triumphed in security testing – whereas one lotion from a widely known model has been labelled a “Don’t Buy”, in response to the buyer group Which?

It comes because the UK continues to Sizzle in a heatwave, as temperatures neared 30C in lots of areas for 3 consecutive day days.   The Met Office stated yesterday: “Daytime temperatures can be falling barely over the approaching days as we see rising quantities of cloud and heavy, thundery showers growing.”

However, while temperatures may be set to fall for now, the sunscreen safety testing results will still be useful to know if the sunshine continues.  Two rounds of testing by the watchdog found Avon’s Refreshing 3-in-1 Face and Body Sun Lotion SPF30, priced at £5.75 for 150ml, “did not come close to hitting its claimed SPF30”.

Which? advised consumers to avoid the product, saying it did not offer adequate sun protection.
