James Cleverly has downplayed Joe Biden‘s function in resolving the Northern Ireland Brexit deal insisting US strain didn’t have an effect on the negotiations with the EU.

Speaking to Daily Express US in regards to the Windsor Framework, Mr Cleverly mentioned: “Everybody wanted it, we wanted it, the US wanted.

“When I went to Northern Ireland and spoke to the stunning girl who ran the backyard centre, they needed it sorted.

“Northern Ireland business, they wanted it sorted. Everyone wanted it sorted.”

He added: “The Americans were very vocal that they wanted it resolved but they weren’t unique.”

On the specter of Mr Biden cancelling his journey to Northern Ireland final month if a deal was not struck, Mr Cleverly mentioned: “As I said at the time, there were people speculating ‘do you want to get this sorted so Biden can come on his visit?’

“The level I made on the time, and I stand by it, is it’s all the time good to get a go to from a US President, one in all our most vital relationships on the earth.

“But we are not doing it to get the visit. We are doing it because it needs sorting.

“And we will sort it as quickly as we can, we are neither rushing nor delaying it for any external factor. We want to sort it because we want to sort it.”

Mr Biden prompted fury when he mentioned he visited Ireland to verify the “Brits didn’t screw around” at a Democrat occasion in New York earlier this month.

In remarks revealed afterward the White House web site, the US President mentioned: “I got to go back to Ireland for the Irish Accords… to make sure the Brits didn’t screw around and Northern Ireland didn’t walk away from their commitments.”

Mr Biden – who has Irish roots – met Rishi Sunak in Northern Ireland however spent most of his four-day journey within the Republic of Ireland.
