Athlete dies whereas swimming in Swansea Triathlon, organisers say

An athlete died whereas swimming within the Swansea Triathlon on Sunday morning.

In an announcement posted on Facebook, Activity Events Wales – which runs the occasion with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) – stated: “It is with heavy hearts that we affirm the passing of an athlete throughout the swim part of immediately’s triathlon.

“Our most sincere condolences go out to the family.

“We want to thank the unbelievable efforts of the swim security crew, St John Ambulance, the speedy response crew, the police, volunteers and members of the general public concerned on the scene,” the assertion added.

The Welsh Ambulance Service informed Sky News they had been known as to a medical emergency at 9.15am in Swansea.

“We sent a rapid response vehicle, an emergency ambulance, and the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service,” a spokesman stated.

“We were also supported by St John’s Ambulance. This is all the information we can provide at this time.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for UWTSD informed WalesOn-line: “The university is sad to hear the news that an individual has passed away during the Swansea Triathlon today.

“As sponsors of the occasion, we ship our deepest condolences to the household and people affected by this tragedy.”

Around 1,500 individuals had been anticipated to compete within the triathlon immediately, which included a 750m swim, a 20km bike trip and a 5km run.

Sky News has contacted South Wales Police, who declined to remark, and St John Ambulance.
