“I do know individuals speak about this gang and that gang, however I’m right here every single day, and I really feel secure – I really feel proud to work right here.”
Another local, Shamsun Choudhury, admitted that the amount of violence meant the area was “beginning to really feel like America with all these shootings and stabbings”.
She added that while she was concerned for her childrens’ safety, she had never thought of leaving.

Ms Choudhury, who works with local women and migrant communities, explained: “Lozells is nice – I like residing right here.
“My husband always wanted to move but I would miss what I have here.
“I’ve lived right here for nearly 40 years – my youngsters are raised right here – I do know my neighbours, I do know everybody on my avenue, you are not going to get that anyplace else.
“There is crime here, of course, there was a stabbing the other day, but we move past it and we get on.
“One factor that annoys me is the litter – we are saying cleanliness is subsequent to godliness, I’d wish to see the world stored cleaner.”
However, one local shop worker, who wanted to remain anonymous, did highlight the rise of drug problems in the area.
They said: “There’s quite a lot of HMOs right here, lots of people begging. The litter is a giant downside too – and I do not suppose the council is doing something to cease it.
“Gang-wise, there’s not a problem anymore, but drugs are still a big problem. I’ve grown up here all my life, but in the past few years, the area has gotten worse.”
