However, in February 2023 the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated it had a “duty to stop the case” following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new materials that got here to gentle”.

Those developments meant there was “not a practical prospect of conviction” and led to the decision by the CPS to discontinue prosecution and drop the charges against Greenwood.

The CPS has “defined” the decision “to all events”, it stated in a press release on the time.

Last week the membership stated they had been working “through the final stages” of their inner investigation into Greenwood, having accomplished the “fact-finding phase”.

Richard Arnold, Manchester United’s CEO, stated the membership’s investigation “sought to collate as much evidence as possible to establish facts and context”.

He stated: “While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason’s accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for.”

Protests have been held firstly of the brand new season, with some followers threatening to withdraw their help for United if the membership reintegrates Greenwood into the crew.

Among them is well-known supporter and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley.

She stated she wouldn’t be able to remain a fan if Greenwood stays at United.
