The Government-commissioned report written by former National Grid boss Nick Winser, stated it's "vital and challenging" to make sure the supply of recent grid connections is sped up.

Mr Winser stated: "Delivering 50 gigawatts (GW) of new wind power and 24 GW of new nuclear will be a major step towards decarbonising our economy and providing customers with clean, secure, affordable electricity, but that magnificent achievement will be wasted if we cannot get the power to homes and businesses.

"The implications of having the ability to construct wind era quicker than the related connections to prospects will likely be severe - very excessive congestion prices for purchasers and clear, low cost home vitality era standing idle, probably for years.

"I believe that we must... reduce the overall timescale to seven years.

"I'm assured that is achievable so long as we streamline the method as proposed within the report and take a clear, respectful and environment friendly strategy when partaking with individuals and communities in regards to the influence."

Britain requires an enormous amount of investment to deliver the clean electricity which will power cars, homes and industries in the future. Wind turbines, solar panels and other solutions have been popping up all over the country.

A trade-off for the cheap energy both wind and solar farms can provide is that they are often smaller scale, rather than being one huge power plant.

This means the grid needs to pull lots of smaller cables to many different power generation sites across the country, rather than enormous cables to few big coal plants. However, very few transmission lines have been built in the last 30 years.

The report included a series of recommendations for the Government and regulators, including a call to link the financial returns companies operating the transmission network make to their successfully delivering the lines needed.

It called for a public campaign to explain why massive upgrades are necessary, for the environment, to keep the lights on and to heat people's homes.

The report recommended getting local communities on board should also include some kind of more direct benefit for them. It suggested paying lump sums to households close to the infrastructure and community funds which can be spent to upgrade homes.

The report said supply chains and workforce skills are likely to be stretched over the coming years. It said companies should make sure they have access to enough cables and the Government must lead an effort to tackle the skills shortage.

Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps welcomed the report and will consider its recommendations before presenting an action plan later this year.

He said in a statement: "The UK is main the world on renewable vitality and decarbonising quicker than some other nation within the G7.

"We must ensure we are taking full advantage of our success and getting the increased supply of homegrown, clean energy that we have at our fingertips to people’s homes and businesses for years to come. That is why we asked Nick Winser to carry out this review - I welcome his report and am grateful for his work.

"This is one other essential step as we proceed to reform our vitality system to drive down payments, develop the economic system and guarantee tyrants like [Russian President, Vladimir] Putin can by no means once more use vitality as a weapon of battle."

The trade body for the energy sector said the Government needed to urgently respond to the recommendations.

Energy UK deputy director Adam Berman said: "Cutting the time to plan and construct community infrastructure is arguably probably the most urgent problem dealing with the vitality transition."

He added: "We welcome Nick Winser's suggestions, notably the give attention to strategic community planning in addition to provide chain growth and expertise, and encourage the Government to reply to these suggestions with urgency and ambition."
