Managed explosion at Buckingham Palace as man arrested

The Metropolitan Police stated officers arrested a person round 7pm tonight after he approached the Palace gates, and threw a "number of items" within the residence grounds.

They added that the objects have been recovered, and that the person is now in custody after he was additionally discovered to be in possession of a "suspicious bag".

They stated: "Officers quickly detained a man at around 7pm on Tuesday, May 2, after he approached the gates of Buckingham Palace SW1 and threw a number of items - suspected to be shotgun cartridges - into the Palace grounds.

"These have been recovered and will probably be taken for specialist examination. There have been no reviews of any pictures fired, or any accidents.

"The man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and will be taken into custody.

"Cordons are in place after the person was additionally discovered to be in possession of a suspicious bag. Specialists are in attendance and can assess the merchandise."

Police later carried out a controlled explosion of the objects, the Met confirmed in a statement.
