Former One Direction star Liam Payne has revealed he has been in hospital with a "serious kidney infection" and has been compelled to cancel gigs.

The 29-year-old singer mentioned he had "no choice" however to postpone his upcoming tour of South America "with a heavy heart".

"Over the past week I've been in hospital with a serious kidney infection, it's something I wouldn't wish on anyone, and doctors' orders are that I now need to rest and recover," Payne posted on Instagram.

"I was beyond excited to come play for you guys.

"To all of you who've purchased tickets: I'm so sorry. We're working to re-schedule the tour as quickly as we probably can, however for now we can be refunding the tickets - so please look out for updates out of your level of buy.

"Thanks as always for the love and support, and look forward to seeing you soon."

Payne has launched into a solo profession after One Direction introduced they had been going an indefinite hiatus in 2015.
