More than 70,000 individuals have signed a petition demanding the new 20mph speed limit in Labour-run Wales is scrapped.

The default pace restrict for residential roads was yesterday dropped from 30mph to 20mph.

The Welsh Government has stated that slicing the pace restrict would shield lives and save NHS sources.

But a petition on the Senedd's web site calling for the transfer to be reversed has hit 70,000 signatures, together with over 50,000 within the final 24 hours.

Critics have pointed to the £33 cost to implement the scheme, while it is estimated to hit the Welsh economy by up to £9 billion.

Lee Waters, deputy minister for climate change, admitted "choices like this may be unpopular".
