A person has died after being attacked by a "dangerously out of control" canine in Leigh.

The 37-year-old was discovered by officers within the city in Greater Manchester with critical accidents shortly after 9.10pm on Thursday.

He was taken to hospital the place he later died within the early hours of Friday.

Greater Manchester Police mentioned armed officers had been deployed to try to management the canine and used "every available tactic to subdue" the animal earlier than it was destroyed as a result of it posed a "significant risk" to the general public.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being in command of a dangerously uncontrolled canine inflicting harm leading to dying.

Detective Superintendent Simon Hurst, of GMP's Wigan district, mentioned: "Firstly, I would like to extend my condolences to the loved ones of the victim of this attack. Our officers and our partners are currently supporting the victim's loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

"We recognise this incident will rightly trigger concern throughout the native space and we want to reassure the general public that we explored each potential avenue to guard the local people and the animal concerned.

"We would urge members of the public to please come forward if they have any information in regard to this incident, any information you may have may be a huge help to our investigation."
