Greenwood had charges for attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour dropped earlier this year. The 21-year-old has always denied the allegations against him. United refuted claims this week that a plan was in place to bring Greenwood back to the first team, insisting no final decision has been made.

Their statement read: "The fact-finding section of our investigation is now full, and we're within the remaining phases of creating a call on Mason’s future.

"Contrary to media hypothesis, that call has not but been made and is at present the topic of intensive inside deliberation. Responsibility in the end rests with the Chief Executive Officer. Once made, the choice will likely be communicated and defined to the membership’s inside and exterior stakeholders.
