Nigel Farage says he has "never seen people so angry" as anti-ULEZ protesters gathered outdoors Downing Street on the first day of the expansion.

The former Ukip and Brexit Party chief joined demonstrators lining the street resulting in Downing Street within the centre of London.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Farage shared a video of the crowds and requested London Mayor Sadiq Khan if he was "listening".

The GB News presenter stated: "Huge anti-ULEZ protest happening outside of Downing Street right now.

"I’ve by no means seen folks so indignant about this new tax on working folks. Are you listening Sadiq Khan?"

It comes as the charging zone, which previously only covered central London, was widened today to the whole of the capital.

It means more drivers will be forced to pay the £12.50 daily fee for the most polluting vehicles in a bid to improve air quality.

Anti-ULEZ protesters gathered outside Downing Street today blowing whistles and banging drums.

Some carried placards saying "Stop the poisonous air lie" and "ULEZ all about cash", while others had mocked-up car registration plates reading: "Get Khan out"

Husband and wife Tom and Carolyn Dare were among the crowd taking part in the demonstration against the ULEZ expansion.

Ms Dare said she wanted Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to "overrule" the Labour Mayor of London. Mr Dare said Mr Khan was "shutting down London principally".

Reform UK London mayoral candidate Howard Cox, who is a pro-motorist campaigner, was also at the protest.

Mr Khan defended the widening of the zone despite strong opposition from across the political spectrum during a bruising round of interviews this morning.

He told BBC Breakfast: "We now have a very efficient coverage to scale back air air pollution.

"It's shown to be effective in central London and inner London, but I think clean air is a right not a privilege.

"What about outer London? Why should not they breathe clear air?

"Why should they carry on dying prematurely in numbers that could be reversed?"

But Transport Secretary Mark Harper stated the growth will not be about air air pollution however a "money-raising exercise".

Mr Sunak additionally hit out at Mr Khan and Labour over the growth.

He stated: I believe folks and households are battling the price of dwelling, that's apparent to everybody.

"And at that time, the Labour Party, the Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan and Keir Starmer are introducing the Ulez charge which is going to hit working families.
