RAF scrambles Typhoons to intercept Russian jets close to Scotland

Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters stationed in Scotland have been dispatched to intercept a Russian navy airplane that was working near UK airspace. The airplane was recognized as a Tu-142 Maritime Patrol plane, also referred to as a Bear-F by NATO. It approached from the North-East and flew in worldwide airspace over the Norwegian Sea and North Atlantic Ocean on Sunday.

Norwegian F-35A fighter jets had been additionally launched to watch the Russian plane as a part of NATO's response.

An RAF Typhoon pilot mentioned the scramble "demonstrated the close working relationships we have with our NATO colleagues."

They continued: "After scrambling to intercept the Russian aircraft, we were in close contact with RAF Battlespace Managers, who directed us towards the aircraft and relayed orders throughout, ensuring we could confirm where they were and what they were doing at all times."

A Voyager plane from RAF Brize Norton offered further air-to-air refueling help, and the National Air and Space Operations Centre at RAF High Wycombe and the Air Surveillance and Control System at RAF Boulmer offered command and management. QRA procedures contain the RAF holding plane and crews at steady excessive readiness to take off inside minutes and intercept any unidentified plane flying within the UK's space of curiosity to guard UK sovereign airspace if required.
