Rory McIlroy has revealed the true motive behind his choice to resign from the PGA Tour coverage board this week, insisting that "something had to give". McIlroy's resignation comes at a time when the PGA Tour is locked in negotiations with LIV Golf and the DP World Tour about ratifying the details of the 'framework agreement' that was announced between the three parties in June, which brought to an end months of legal battles between the PGA and LIV.

A deadline of December 31 to officially settle on the deal is fast approaching but according to ESPN, a meeting that was attended by McIlroy's close alley Tiger Woods and other player representatives is reported to have taken place that offered some insight into what the proposed deal may entail.

It is claimed that players on the PGA Tour will be offered part-ownership of a new for-profit golf project that will come about from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger.

Precious little detail has emerged from the talks but McIlroy insists that is not something people should be worrying about.

Speaking about the merger deadline: "I feel for those who had been in the midst of it, you'll see that there is a path ahead. It's simply that nobody on the skin has any particulars. Loose lips sink ships, so we try to maintain it tight and inside partitions. I'm positive when there's news to inform, will probably be advised.

"I think getting something done sooner rather than later is a good thing, because you know, even if we get a deal done, it doesn't mean that it's actually going to happen."
