A faux Facebook submit that wrongly claimed ex-rugby league participant and charity hero Rob Burrow had died has been slammed by rugby bosses. Leeds Rhinos condemned the “hateful news that is totally untrue” and added that it was “upsetting” for the star’s household.

The Super League membership confirmed that Burrow, who not too long ago took half in a marathon in Leeds, which was held in his honour, was “fine”.

They added that he was “looking forward to enjoying the bank holiday weekend”.

The account that posted the faux news was made to appear like it was an official Leeds Rhinos one and falsely claimed the 40-year-old had died at 8am this morning.

In response, the membership's official account posted: “Please do not share any content on social media regarding Rob Burrow."

“A fake account was set up today on Facebook to spread hateful news that is totally untrue and upsetting for the family. Rob is fine and looking forward to enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend with his family.

“We have reported the offensive to Meta and hope it will be taken down as soon as possible.”

Burrow was recognized with motor neurone disease four years ago and since then, has tirelessly raised funds and awareness of a condition which has blighted the lives of so many. 

Kevin Sinfield, his long-term friend and fellow player at Leeds Rhinos, has been a constant presence at his side and has raised more than £8 million for MND charities.
