Laetitia Richard, who needed to flee the Chenes Rouges campsite in Argeles sur Mer, mentioned it was ravaged by flames.

She instructed BFM TV: "We were coming back from a walk and we saw the smoke. We said to ourselves, 'it's not possible!'

"Last 12 months already, we have been in Gironde, however 30km from the hearth. This time it was very shut."

Stephanie Bodinier, 49, who is in Argeles-sur-Mer with her husband and daughter, said: "We have been within the pool and we noticed smoke and ashes. When I noticed the planes, we took our issues."
