Robert Jenrick as we speak defended the Government's unlawful immigration crackdown as he used Australia as a comparability.

Mr Jenrick stated: "The asylum system is riddled with abuse, now we have to be trustworthy with ourselves.

"The way to tackle that is by changing fundamentally the way we handle asylum.

"And that is what we're doing with our Illegal Migration Bill. That's acquired a wholly totally different premise to the previous system.

"It's saying if you come here illegally, for example on a small boat, you will be here for days or weeks in detained accommodation, you'll then be returned home if it's safe to do so, or to a safe third country like Rwanda.

"That will create the deterrent we desperately want, it'll break the enterprise mannequin of the folks smuggling gangs and it'll cease the system coming beneath insupportable stress like it's as we speak."

Mr Jenrick pointed to Australia, which started sending asylum seekers to offshore detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru, when pressed that there is "deep scepticism" over whether the plan will work.
