A ship carrying British vacationers has overturned in Italy whereas the passengers have been celebrating a birthday, with the one reported to have tragically died. The 16m boat is believed to have capsized because of a “whirlwind” which struck the vessel on Lake Maggiore, on the border of Italy and Switzerland.

The majority of the 25 aboard have been capable of swim to security and land on the seashores between Lisanza and Piccaluga. Other boats within the space ultimately got here to their help.

Three others have been taken with “not very critical” accidents, whereas two individuals have been rushed to the hospital in a “moderately critical” state.

Lombard’s governor Attilio Fontana mentioned in an announcement: “Unfortunately there is news of some missing people.

“A whirlwind prompted a really severe accident.

“The firefighters of the Milan diving unit are at work on the spot together with the guard coast, to the air rescue and to the ambulances of Areu – informs Fontana -.

“I’m following with apprehension the updates of the rescue groups on the spot which I thank “.

According to Italian media outlet La Repubblica, another boat noticed individuals in the water, which prompted the alarm to be raised.

Lake Maggiore, known for its popularity among British tourists, is the second-largest lake in Italy.
