An Indian authorities official has been suspended after ordering a reservoir to be drained so he might discover his telephone. 

Food inspector Rajesh Vishwas dropped his Samsung smartphone in Kherkatta dam whereas taking a selfie, The Times of India newspaper reported.

Mr Vishwas instructed reporters the water was unusable for irrigation and he had acquired permission from a senior official to empty the reservoir.

Authorities suspended Mr Vishwas after he was broadly criticised for losing water sources.

India is among the world’s most water-stressed nations and excessive temperatures have led to extreme water shortage, inflicting crop losses, forest fires and energy cuts.
