‘Exceptional’ discovery as 6,000-year-old carved wooden present in UK
A bit of carved wooden found by likelihood is greater than 6,000 years previous – making it the oldest of its variety within the UK, specialists say.
The ornamental markings had been made by Late Mesolithic folks 2,000 years earlier than Stonehenge was constructed and 4,500 years earlier than the Romans got here to Britain.
The metre-long piece of oak was found mendacity in peat in the course of the development of an outbuilding at a property within the village of Boxford in Berkshire.
It was discovered roughly 1.5 metres under the floor and never removed from the current course of the River Lambourn.
Historic England has dated the specimen to the Late Mesolithic interval (4640-4605 BC).
Experts recommend it pre-dates by 500 years the one different identified Mesolithic carved timber in Britain, found close to Maerdy in Wales.

After being notified of the discover in 2019, West Berkshire Council’s archaeologist Sarah Orr contacted Historic England for professional recommendation.
Landowner Derek Fawcett, a retired urological surgeon, has now donated the timber to the West Berkshire Museum in Newbury the place it is going to ultimately go on show.
The museum can be working with the Boxford History Project to rearrange for the timber to go on mortgage to the Boxford village heritage centre.
