Head coach Brendon McCullum had been bullish in his positivity that Moeen could be match for Lord’s, with the week-long break between matches hoped to be sufficient time for the finger to heal. There continues to be an opportunity that Moeen might play subsequent week, however England have determined back-up is critical and have referred to as up Ahmed as cowl. He will be a part of the squad within the coming days.

Upon Ahmed’s shock choice in December, Stokes mentioned: “We obviously brought him into the squad to try and get him amongst us and experience what it’s like being in this cricket team and we’ve been very impressed with what we’ve seen.
“He’s bought plenty of talent with each bat and ball, so it is nice to have the ability to carry somebody with the expertise and the thrill that he has into the squad and see what he is bought.”
