Hamilton was refused entry into Wimbledon Royal Box over wardrobe malfunction

The event chiefs did insist on the time that he could be welcomed again sooner or later, as then-All England Club CEO Richard Lewis advised Sky Sports: “Lewis arrived and it hadn’t been communicated to him by his assistants that it was a jacket and tie.

“Lewis fully understood, he was very comfortable with the fact that it was a jacket and tie dress code. He couldn’t find the appropriate clothing for himself quick enough so he decided not to go into the Royal Box. It was all very harmonious and we’ve made it clear to Lewis already that he’d be more than welcome to come back to the Royal Box in the future – and I’m sure he will.”

While Hamilton himself understood and revered the choice, there was loads of backlash on social media on the time. Gary Lineker led the disbelief that Hamilton was turned away, as he tweeted: “Might be me, but turning away @LewisHamilton from the Royal box for not wearing a bloody jacket and tie shows England as its pompous worst.”
