Ryan Giggs avoids retrial over claims he abused ex-girlfriend as costs dropped

Ryan Giggs’ retrial over home violence allegations has been deserted. The costs have been withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at a listening to at Manchester Crown Court.

 

Giggs, 49, was because of go on trial for a second time on July 31, accused of controlling or coercive behaviour in the direction of his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, 39, between August 2017 and November 2020.

Chris Daw KC, defending Giggs who was not current in courtroom, stated: “Mr Giggs is deeply relieved the prosecution has finally come to an end after almost three years in which he’s been fighting throughout to clear his name.

“He has at all times been harmless of those costs, there’s been very, very many lies instructed about him in courtroom.

“He’s now been found not guilty of all the charges and going forward would like to rebuild his life and career as an innocent man.”

Giggs had additionally been accused of assault by “losing control” and headbutting Ms Greville and the widespread assault of her sister, Emma, by elbowing her within the jaw, throughout a row at his dwelling in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on November 1 2020.

He denied the offences and underwent a month-long trial, ending when the jury failed to achieve any verdicts final August.

Prosecutors then sought and have been granted an software for a retrial, scheduled to start on July 31, after telling Judge Hilary Manley the complainants have been prepared to provide proof at a second trial.

Peter Wright KC instructed Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was not now continuing with the case.
