Joe Rankin, 34, murdered susceptible Emma Potter, 40, at her house in Stroud, Gloucestershire – after which her physique lay undiscovered for six weeks.

After his arrest, Rankin admitted to a psychiatrist that he had gone to the flat on September 20 final yr with a purpose to kill Emma.

Handing Rankin a life sentence, Judge Peter Blair, Recorder for Bristol, ordered that he should serve 24 years earlier than being thought-about for launch on licence.

Rankin’s actions after she had died have been “an act of gross desecration and insult”, Judge Blair said.

Christopher Quinlan KC, prosecuting, told at Bristol Crown Court after Emma had been repeatedly stabbed by Rankin, her body lay undiscovered in her flat until she was eventually found by police on 4 November.

Six days afterwards, Rankin told his friend, Joshua Tucker-Bradshaw, what he had done, and Mr Tucker-Bradshaw in turn told the police.

Officers were then able to place Rankin, of, Stroud, at the scene on the night of Emma’s death using his mobile phone.

CCTV also showed Rankin return to Emma’s flat eight days later, on September 28.

Police have never been able to establish the reason for this, but think he may have been trying to eliminate evidence.

In mitigation, David Aubrey, Rankin’s solicitor, said his client had a history of mental health issues and drug addiction.

During the sentencing today, Emma’s adopted mother Jenny gave a victim impact statement, explaining the effect that the murder had on her family.

She said: “How can we dad and mom bear it, we who had cherished her as an exquisite child?

“How can her murderer live with the knowledge of what he has done to a fellow human being?

“Did she attempt to escape these thrusts and stabs? Or did an early blow silence her shortly and eternally?

“We will never know but these images will stay with us always.”

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Adam Stacey, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, paid tribute to Emma’s household.

He mentioned: “I want to thank them for the poise and dignity they have shown throughout this case.

“This was a horrific homicide they usually have displayed unimaginable bravery.

“I know this sentence will bring a sense of comfort for them as their daughter’s killer faces a long stay in prison.”
