Household journey ends in horror as boy falls 100ft into Grand Canyon

A 13-year-old boy has miraculously survived after falling almost 100 toes into the Grand Canyon on a household journey.

Rescuers needed to abseil down the cliff after Wyatt Kauffman slipped on the Bright Angel Point path on the North Rim of the Arizona vacationer attraction whereas visiting the realm together with his mum.

The teenager was airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas with accidents together with 9 damaged vertebrae, a ruptured spleen, a collapsed lung, concussion and a damaged hand and dislocated finger.

The Associated Press studies it took rescuers from a National Park Service search and rescue group round two hours to rescue Wyatt.

Speaking to Phoenix TV station KPNX, {the teenager} stated: “I was up on the ledge and was moving out of the way so other people could take a picture.

“I squatted down and was holding on to a rock. I only had one hand on it.

“It wasn’t that good of a grip. It was kind of pushing me back. I lost my grip and started to fall back.”

The injured boy, from Casselton, North Dakota, was lifted out of the canyon in a basket following the autumn on Tuesday.

Speaking from hospital, he added: “I just remember somewhat waking up and being in the back of an ambulance and a helicopter and getting on a plane and getting here.” 

Dad Brian Kauffman was in North Dakota when he heard his son had fallen. He added Wyatt had been discharged from hospital and was being pushed house on Sunday – and due again by Tuesday.

Speaking to KPNX, Brian stated: “We’re extremely grateful for the work of everyone. Two hours is an eternity in a situation like that.

“We’re just lucky we’re bringing our kid home in a car in the front seat instead of in a box.”
