US Open star spent whole earnings paying off agent after signing contract at 14
US Open favorite Marketa Vondrousova, who received the Wimbledon title this summer time, has not at all times had it simple. With little or no cash in her household, the Czech star was pressured to signal a contract on the age of 14 which gave away a portion of all her future profession earnings.
In return, the agent that put the deal collectively funded all of Vondrousova’s prices as she progressed via the junior ranks and moved to Prague on her personal aged 15. She shortly constructed a powerful status and made it onto the principle WTA tour.
In 2018 Vondrousova received her first WTA title in Biel and reached the fourth spherical of the US Open, pocketing a mammoth £211,000 ($266k) in prize cash. But she spent all of her earnings as much as that date shopping for herself out of the contract.
“I decided I wanted to end it so I had to buy him [out] for the contract to finish,” the 24-year-old advised the Guardian. “So it was crazy times. But I think I did a good thing because he pushed me so much about tournaments and everything. So then it was a bit stressful and I couldn’t do what, you know, what I wanted. So I feel like it was a good choice.”
She added: “I had money till the [end of the] season. I played fourth round at the US Open that year. So that helped me a lot. I think if I were to lose [in] the first round, it was going to be very tough. So I didn’t think about it.”
Vondrousova has gone from energy to energy since that troublesome resolution, reaching the French Open ultimate (2019) and successful Wimbledon this summer time. She now has her sights on consecutive Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows over the following fortnight.
She defined: “I’m not the underdog anymore. I have to get used to that. I feel like it’s a good thing to have the pressure that you are now top 10.
“But now I’m taking it match by match as a result of I really feel like everybody goes to wish to beat you and so they’re going to play some nice pictures as a result of they don’t have anything to lose now. You should take that and simply give attention to each match.”
