Wilko shops begin closing for good on Tuesday as family-owned retailer prepares to close down

Wilko will start shutting its doorways for good on Tuesday, because the high-street retailer prepares to shut down.

Stores throughout the nation, from as far aside as Aldershot, Falmouth and Stafford, are among the many 24 branches to close, with an extra 28 ceasing buying and selling on Thursday.

Last week, rival retailer B&M agreed to buy 51 Wilko stores in a deal value as much as £13m.

The premises will probably be re-branded and it’s unclear if the low cost chain will carry on or rehire any Wilko workers.

Wilko – owned by the founding Wilkinson household for many years – collapsed into administration last month beneath strain from weak shopper spending, fierce competitors from different low cost chains, corresponding to Poundland and The Range, and money owed to suppliers.

All Wilko websites have continued to commerce since then to promote remaining inventory, with the retailer discounting hundreds of merchandise.
