With Luke Donald challenging him to see if he could make it into Europe’s Ryder Cup team on a wildcard berth, Aberg returned to Europe to play in some DP World Tour events. After finishing fourth in his first event he then recorded his first win as a professional golfer at the European Masters.

It was enough to convince Donald that he should include Aberg in his team at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, handing him a wildcard berth ahead of top European player Adrian Meronk despite having never played in a single major – the first player ever to do so.

Aberg did not let his team down, remaining undefeated in four matches over the three-day event, winning two and drawing two.

His maiden PGA Tour win at the RSM Classic has moved him up to 32nd in the world rankings and he is still yet to play in a major. That moment will likely arrive next April when barring injury, he will almost certainly be part of the field at Agusta National that will compete for The Masters.

All-time great Woods has won the Green Jacket on five occasions but there is every chance that Aberg could be trying it on for size at the first attempt.
