A 51-year-old girl who was stabbed to dying in Droylsden, Manchester, on Friday has been named by police as Michelle Hodgkinson.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of homicide. Police have confirmed the person has since been detained underneath the Mental Health Act.

In tribute to Ms Hodgkinson, her household mentioned: “Everyone who knows Michelle is in utter shock at the attack she endured and how horrific her last moments were.

“Our Shelly B was essentially the most wonderful, loving, selfless and humorous daughter, mom, mother-in-law, sister, auntie and most just lately a nanna. It was a privilege to have been identified and liked by her.

“She loved helping people in her community and was known for volunteering as an appropriate adult, her charity work and loved creating hampers to make people smile.

“She could be there for anybody and the day she was taken from us, she was doing simply that – strolling to fulfill her mum to take her buying and to go for a espresso.

Greater Manchester Police officers had been called to Edge Lane, Droylsden, at around 12pm on Friday to reports of a stabbing and confirmed that Ms Hodgkinson died at the scene. Her attacker fled the scene but was arrested later on Friday evening.
