A young person has died after inhaling aerosol fumes. Kacey Bartlett, 15, was discovered lifeless in her room on March 2, 2022, by her grandmother. Multiple aerosol cans had been present in her room, her reason for dying was discovered to be the inhalation of butane.

An inquest at Exeter’s Coroner Court on June 22 heard that the Tavistock College pupil had been doing properly in school and simply completed her mock exams.

After she moved to Devon, Kacey was appointed a youth worker who she saw every two weeks. In a statement, the youth worker told how Kacey had been inspired to pursue a career in health and social care and learn sign language by her disabled sister.

They said: “She was mature past her years. She had lived a tough life and her mum had a tough life and was not getting the assist she wanted.

“I was very shocked to learn of her death. She never made any suicidal ideations to me and seemed to have a plan for life and was working very hard to achieve it. I feel it was a very tragic accident and a life cut too short.”

Recording a conclusion of unintended dying, assistant coroner Luisa Nicholson stated: “There is nothing in the evidence to suggest she inhaled aerosols as a means to end her life.

“Her dying was a really unlucky accident. The hazard of inhaling aerosols can’t be underestimated. I hope her dying was not in useless and serves as a warning to different children.”

“There is not any such factor as a secure excessive.”
